Sermon Recap: Ruth 3:1-18

Redeeming Love

Ruth 3:1-18

This Sunday, we continued our journey through Ruth in a message titled “Redeeming Love,” where we watched the story pivot from quiet grief to bold hope. In Ruth 3, Naomi forms a plan, Ruth steps out in courage, and Boaz responds with steadfast integrity—all pointing us to the Redeemer who meets His people with loyal love.

We saw that redemption isn’t a vague spiritual idea—it’s a costly, personal rescue. Ruth needed someone who could and would act on her behalf. So do we. And just as Boaz steps into the role of redeemer for Ruth, Jesus steps into that role for us with a love that pays the full price so we can truly live.

Redemption is costly, personal, and freely given through the Redeemer who covers us with His love.

Here’s how the story unfolds:

1. Act 1: The Plan (vv. 1–7)

  • Naomi seeks rest for Ruth – Her plan isn’t manipulation; it’s an act of faith rooted in God’s provision.

  • Ruth steps into obedience – Her willingness to follow Naomi’s counsel reveals humility and trust.

  • Redemption defined – To redeem is to “buy back or set free through a payment”—a rescue rooted in sacrifice.

2. Act 2: The Proposal (vv. 8–13)

  • Ruth takes a bold step – Laying at Boaz’s feet is an act of covenant appeal, not romance. She’s asking for protection, not passion.

  • Boaz responds with honor – He doesn’t take advantage of Ruth’s vulnerability; he covers her with blessing, commitment, and integrity.

  • A redeemer emerges – Boaz promises to act, even if it costs him, because that’s what true redeemers do.

3. Act 3: The Provision (vv. 14–18)

  • Boaz moves toward redemption – He sends Ruth home with provision and a promise: “I will settle the matter today.”

  • Naomi waits in hope – She knows Boaz’s character—he will not rest until the work is finished.

  • Three questions for our hearts:

    • Do I recognize my need for redemption?

    • Do I desire redemption?

    • Have I turned to the Redeemer?

“We can experience redemption through Jesus Christ, who lovingly paid the price so that we can live.”

Reflection Questions:

  1. Where do you see your own need for redemption reflected in Ruth’s vulnerability and dependence?

  2. How does Boaz’s integrity and compassion reshape your view of Jesus’ role as Redeemer?

  3. Which of the three questions about redemption presses most on your heart this week?

  4. What would it look like to rest in the Redeemer’s promise the way Naomi rests in Boaz’s?
